Women’s Masters 40+ at Roger Millikan
BREA (February 14, 2016): It was the Women’s Master 40+ Cat 1/2/3/4 race at Roger Millikan. Team Simple Green/Cannondale/Stage21’s Angela Patterson got in a break with Pam Schuster, Renee Robinson, and Charity Chia. They stayed away for about half the race, and with two to go, they passed the field of Women Senior Cat 3/4 who were on the course at the same time but had started earlier.
The moto did not neutralize the 3/4 field, and on the last lap they caught back up to us and passed her and Pam, who were ahead of the other two. On the turn at the bottom of the climb, the front half of the 3/4 field crashed, and Pam and I both skidded and had to brake quite a bit to avoid crashing. The SDBC woman Renee was behind us and was able to stay clear of the chaos, so she didn’t have to slow down. Angela couldn’t reel her back in because she had lost so much momentum, so Renee came in just ahead of me at the finish. Angela had sort of thought she would take second to Pam, didn’t expect to take second to Renee, but c’est la vie. She had to catch a flight a couple hours later and couldn’t stay for the pro 1/2/3 women’s race.
