MEMORIAL RIDE: Sunday October 28th @ 8am (Updated 10/18/12)
NEWPORT BEACH, CA –
As many of you are aware, recently there have been unfortunate and fatal accidents involving fellow cyclists. Three female cyclists were hit in matter of 3 days time, 2 of which were fatal, the other with major injuries.
To spread awareness on sharing the road and create a call to action to help improve on and create safer riding conditions, a memorial ride has been set for Sunday October 28th at 8am. This will also be a fundraiser event in which money raised will go towards funding bicycle safety improvements throughout the city.
We mourn for those who have either lost their lives or been injured and our thoughts go out to their families, friends and the community as a whole.

9/18/12 Update:
There will be an “official” ride around Newport Center to include community and school groups, followed by an approximate 55 mile ride for more of us cyclist types. The event begins at 8:00a. The longer ride will depart at about 8:30, head through CDM, up Newport Coast, then work our way to the Long Beach sharrows via PCH and Naples. Riders are encouraged to ride to Fashion Island to avoid parking issues. I’m told that Whole Foods may be providing morning refreshments and having somebody watching parked bikes for those who wish to visit their café.
As you may know, there has been Bicycle Safety Improvement Fund established by the city which will match donations raised three to one. Improvements already scheduled for installation (I’m told by month’s end) are the sharrows on PCH through CDM. Other safety improvements are already targeted.
